How to Choose a Forklift for Concrete Block Handling

 

Concrete products are heavy, but their weight is usually not the only challenge.

Large precast blocks can also be:

Wide. Long. Rough. Irregularly shaped.

Some are lifted from underneath with forks. Others need specialized clamping or support.

That means the first step is not choosing a forklift model. It is understanding how the block will be picked up.

Confirm the Maximum Block Weight

 

Start with the heaviest product in normal production.

A precast plant may produce several product sizes:

8 tons
12 tons
18 tons
20 tons

If one forklift is expected to handle the entire range, the maximum load needs to be considered.

We also ask whether the heaviest block is moved frequently or only for certain projects.

Measure the Block

 

Provide:

Length
Width
Height
Weight

Then confirm the direction in which the forks enter.

This allows us to estimate the load-center condition and determine the required fork length.

A long 18-ton concrete section is not the same forklift application as a compact 18-ton block.

How Is the Concrete Product Supported?

 

There are several common handling methods.

Fork Pockets

Some precast products include lifting openings or spaces designed for forks.

If so, check:

Opening width

Opening height

Distance between openings

Required insertion depth

The fork thickness must fit the available space.

Lifting From Underneath

Large reinforced forks may be used when the product can be safely supported from underneath.

Longer forks are often required for large concrete sections.

Clamp Handling

Some concrete blocks, bricks or related construction products can be handled using dedicated clamps.

The correct solution depends on the product itself rather than simply adding a clamp to every truck

Fork Length Needs Careful Attention

 

Concrete products often require long forks.

The goal is to support the load adequately without unnecessarily extending the load center.

If the forks are too short, the product may not be properly supported.

If a much longer fork configuration moves the effective load position forward, the truck's actual working capacity needs to be checked.

For special concrete sections, wider carriages or multiple-fork arrangements may also be considered.

Ground Conditions Are Often Difficult

 

Concrete plants are rarely as clean and flat as indoor warehouses.

The forklift may operate around:

  • Dust
  • Gravel
  • Outdoor concrete
  • Mud
  • Broken surfaces
  • Uneven joints

This is why tire selection, ground clearance and traction should be discussed early.

The route between production, storage and loading areas should also be checked.

A forklift that only works well on a smooth indoor floor may not be suitable for a precast yard.

Consider Product Damage

 

Heavy-duty handling does not mean the product can be treated roughly.

Concrete products can suffer:

  • Chipping
  • Edge damage
  • Cracking
  • Surface marks

The attachment or fork position should distribute the load correctly and avoid unnecessary point loading.

This becomes particularly important with finished architectural concrete or products that have already passed final inspection.

Loading Trucks Adds Another Requirement

 

Many concrete-product forklifts also need to load flatbed trucks or trailers.

In this case, consider:

  • Truck deck height
  • Required reach
  • Space beside the trailer
  • Turning area
  • Fork length
  • Visibility

A side-mounted or raised operator position may sometimes improve visibility for highly specialized applications, although this depends on the truck design.

A Practical Factory Example

 

Suppose the customer has a 20-ton concrete block.

Knowing "20 tons" is not enough.

We still need to know:

Is it 1.5 meters long or 3 meters long?

Are there fork pockets?

Can it be supported from underneath?

How high does it need to be lifted?

Will the truck work on smooth concrete or an outdoor yard?

Those answers determine whether a standard heavy-duty fork configuration is enough or whether a customized carriage or load-handling solution is required.

Final Thoughts

 

For concrete block handling, the forklift should be selected around the product geometry and handling method, not only its weight.

Before requesting a quotation, send:

  • Maximum weight
  • Block dimensions
  • Fork-entry position
  • Lifting height
  • Working-surface photos

For unusual precast sections, a drawing is even better.

That information allows the factory to determine a much more realistic configuration before production begins.
