Chassis Structure, Powertrain & Mast Engineering
A specialized forklift should be specified as a complete handling system. The base truck capacity alone does not determine whether a coil ram, tire clamp, jib, crane or lifting beam can handle the intended load.
The engineering condition includes the truck chassis, mast, carriage, attachment mass, attachment projection, cargo center of gravity, lifting height and actual position of the load relative to the front axle.
A basic load moment can be expressed as:
Load Moment = Load Weight × Horizontal Distance to the Load Center
For specialized equipment, however, attachment weight and geometry must also be included. A 16-ton load resting close to a carriage creates a different condition from the same 16-ton load suspended from a hook or supported by a long ram farther in front of the mast.
This is why nominal forklift capacity and attachment capacity should never be compared as isolated figures.
Current Propolift specialized platforms illustrate several different engineering approaches.
Specialized Forklift Platforms
| Application | Current Base Platform | Rated Condition | Specialized System | Main Engineering Input |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Container interior handling | CPCD120 | 12,000 kg @ 600 mm | Low-clearance mast configuration | Door height, cargo size, turning space, free lift |
| Forklift with crane | CPCD160 | 16,000 kg @ 600 mm | Rear-mounted hydraulic crane with outriggers | Crane radius, hook height, lifting chart, setup area |
| Oversized tire handling | CPCD160 | 16,000 kg @ 1,200 mm | Hydraulic tire clamp | Tire diameter, width, weight, clamp opening |
| Precast and project cargo | CPCD250 | 25,000 kg @ 1,220 mm | Multi-hook spreader beam | Lifting points, COG, hook spacing, component dimensions |
| Machinery installation | CPCD180 | 18,000 kg @ 1,200 mm | Carriage-mounted high lifting jib | Hook position, lifting height, suspended-load envelope |
| Steel coil handling | CPCD160 | 16,000 kg @ 600 mm | Single coil ram | Coil OD, ID, width, weight and eye orientation |
The base-truck rating does not automatically represent allowable capacity at every attachment position. Final capacity must be confirmed for the complete truck, attachment and load configuration.
The container-interior model shows why specialized engineering is not always about adding a larger attachment. Its current 12-ton configuration uses a 2,230 mm lowered mast height, 2,300 mm lift height and 1,140 mm free lift so the truck can work around restricted vertical clearance while retaining heavy-load capability.
At the other end of the application range, a high lifting jib or spreader beam changes the load path through the mast and chassis. The engineering review therefore starts with the real lifting point and cargo center of gravity rather than assuming the forklift's original load center remains unchanged.
For coil projects, the attachment geometry must follow the coil itself. Ram diameter and length need to suit the coil inside diameter and width while keeping the final load position within the approved working condition. Hydraulic Circuitry, Operational Safety & Rigorous Working Conditions
Specialized attachments change the hydraulic requirements as well as the mechanical load condition.
A standard forklift normally requires lift and mast-tilt functions. A tire clamp may require opening and closing, rotation or additional positioning functions. A crane requires its own lifting, extension, slewing and stabilizer circuits. Other attachments may require extra valve sections, hose routing over the mast and separate operating controls.
The hydraulic circuit should therefore be defined during production instead of treating the attachment as an accessory to be added after delivery.

For a tire clamp, hydraulic pressure must provide enough gripping force to control the tire without applying unnecessary local pressure to the sidewall or bead area. Clamp opening range and contact geometry should be matched to the actual tire sizes. The current Propolift CPCD160 tire-handling platform uses a high-pressure load-sensing hydraulic system, while attachment dimensions are configured around the required tire range.
Suspended-load applications require a different operating assessment. A jib or hook attachment moves the lifting point away from the carriage and may allow the load to move relative to the truck. Hook position, sling length, rigging, cargo center of gravity and travel route therefore become part of the working envelope.
The same principle applies to a forklift-mounted crane, but with an additional distinction: crane lifting should follow the applicable crane working-radius and outrigger condition rather than the forklift capacity plate alone.
Container-interior handling presents almost the opposite problem. Here the main constraint is often physical clearance. Lowered mast height, overhead-guard height, fork length, turning radius and free lift must all be checked against the container doorway and internal working space before production.
No attachment can compensate for an unsuitable operating surface. Heavy specialized trucks may place significant axle and wheel loads on the ground, while suspended or offset cargo further changes the stability condition. Factory floors, outdoor yards, ramps and transition areas should therefore be evaluated against the complete loaded machine.

Quality Assurance, Load Verification & Factory Delivery at Propolift
A specialized forklift requires more than a basic start-up and lifting check because the attachment becomes part of the machine's operating system.
Before shipment, the confirmed truck configuration should first be checked against the approved project specification: base model, mast, engine, tyres, attachment dimensions, hydraulic functions, fork or hook arrangement and any customer-specific operating requirement.
Functional testing should then cover the movements relevant to the actual attachment.
For a coil ram, inspection includes attachment alignment, mounting condition and operation under the agreed load condition.
For a tire clamp, the opening range, closing movement, hydraulic response and contact arrangement should be checked.
For a lifting jib or spreader beam, the hook position, attachment connection and working movement must correspond to the approved lifting arrangement.
For a container-interior model, critical dimensions such as lowered mast height, overall height, lift height and free lift should be verified because a dimensional error may prevent the truck from entering the intended working space even if its lifting capacity is correct.

Where a project requires a defined proof-load test, stability verification, attachment pressure test or customer witness inspection, the load, attachment position, test duration and acceptance criteria should be agreed before production. These project tests should not be presented as one universal procedure for every specialized forklift.
The final machine record should identify the configuration that was actually supplied. For an attachment-equipped truck, this is particularly important because later changes to the ram, clamp, jib, spreader beam or hydraulic circuit may affect capacity and safe operation.
Export preparation also depends on the attachment geometry. Long rams, booms, crane components or wide lifting beams may need to be removed or secured separately for sea transport. Reassembly points, hydraulic connections and component identification should be marked so the truck can be returned to the approved configuration after delivery.
Frequently Asked Questions About Specialized Forklifts
Q: Does installing a special attachment reduce the forklift's lifting capacity?
A: It can. An attachment adds its own mass and may move the cargo farther forward from the mast. The usable capacity therefore depends on attachment weight, projection, cargo center of gravity and lift height. The complete truck, attachment and load condition should be reviewed before the final capacity is confirmed.
Q: What information is required for a steel coil ram forklift?
A: Provide the maximum coil weight, outside diameter, inside diameter, coil width and eye orientation. The inside diameter affects ram size, while coil width influences ram length and final load position. Photos or drawings showing how the coils are stored are also useful during configuration review.
Q: What measurements are needed for a forklift working inside a container?
A: Provide the container or doorway height, available internal width, cargo dimensions, required lift height, fork length and loading direction. Overall truck height and mast-lowered height must be checked together with turning space. Free lift may also be important when raising cargo under restricted overhead clearance.
Q: Can the same forklift use different attachments after delivery?
A: Sometimes, but an attachment change should not be treated as a simple accessory replacement. Carriage interface, attachment weight, hydraulic functions and the revised load position must be checked first. Where the change affects rated capacity or safe operation, the capacity information and operating limits may also need to be revised.
Factory Engineering Review for Non-Standard Loads
A specialized forklift quotation should begin with the cargo and working method rather than a model number.
Send the maximum load weight, dimensions, center-of-gravity information, lifting or support points, required working height, travel route, available clearance, ground condition and photographs or drawings of the actual cargo.
For coil handling, include OD, ID and width. For tire handling, provide tire diameter, width and weight. For suspended loads, specify the required hook position, lifting height and rigging arrangement. For container work, provide the doorway and internal working dimensions.
Propolift can review the base forklift, attachment geometry, load position, mast, hydraulic functions and site restrictions as one system before the production configuration is confirmed.
