How To Choose The Right Mast For A Heavy Duty Forklift

Customers often tell us the lifting height they need, but lifting height is only one part of mast selection.

For a heavy duty forklift, the maximum lifting height, closed mast height and available working clearance all need to be considered together.

Choosing an unnecessarily tall mast can increase overall height and complexity, while choosing a mast that is too short may prevent the forklift from completing the required job.

Start With The Actual Lifting Height

The first question is simple:

How high does the bottom of the load actually need to reach?

For example, loading cargo onto a truck may require a much lower lifting height than stacking materials several meters high.

There is little benefit in specifying a 6 meter mast if the forklift normally works below 3 meters.

For heavy duty forklifts, using the necessary lifting height rather than the highest possible height can also help maintain a more practical configuration.

Closed Mast Height Can Be Just As Important

The forklift must sometimes pass through:

  • factory doors
  • warehouses
  • containers
  • covered loading areas
  • low-clearance structures

In these situations, the mast height when fully lowered becomes critical.

A forklift may have enough lifting capacity and lifting height but still be unsuitable if it cannot enter the working area.

This is especially important for specialized forklifts designed for container or indoor operation.

Duplex Or Triplex Mast?

A duplex mast uses two mast stages and is commonly selected when the required lifting height is moderate.

A triplex mast uses three stages and can provide greater lifting height while controlling the lowered mast height.

However, the more complex option is not automatically the better option.

For large forklifts handling very heavy loads, mast strength, visibility, overall height and the customer's real lifting requirement should all be considered.

Provide The Working Dimensions

Before confirming a mast, we normally recommend providing:

  • required lifting height
  • doorway or ceiling height
  • load height
  • loading platform height
  • indoor or outdoor operation
  • required free lift, if applicable

At Propolift, mast configuration is selected according to the actual operating space rather than simply choosing the tallest available option.

For heavy duty forklifts, the right mast should provide enough lifting height while keeping the truck practical for its working environment.
