How to Choose a Forklift for Steel Coil Handling

Steel coil handling looks straightforward until the actual working condition is reviewed.
A buyer may tell us:
"We need a forklift for a 15-ton steel coil."
But before we can recommend the truck, we normally need several more details.
For steel coils, weight is important, but the coil dimensions and handling method are just as important.
What Information Should Be Confirmed?
For a steel coil project, we normally ask for:
- Maximum coil weight
- Outside diameter
- Inside diameter
- Coil width
- Coil orientation
- Required lifting height
- Storage method
- Working surface
These details help determine both the forklift and the attachment.
Maximum Coil Weight
The forklift should be selected according to the heaviest coil that will be handled in normal operation.
If the majority of coils weigh 10 tons but some reach 15 tons, the higher working condition must be considered.
However, this does not mean that a nominal 15-ton forklift is automatically the correct choice.
The load center and attachment still need to be checked.
Coil Dimensions
For coil handling, we usually pay close attention to:
OD - Outside Diameter
ID - Inside Diameter
Width
If a coil ram is used, the inside diameter determines whether the ram can enter the coil correctly.
The coil width also affects the required ram length and the final load position.
A wider coil may place the center of gravity farther from the truck.
Standard Forks or Coil Ram?
Different factories use different methods.
Standard Forks
If coils are stored on a suitable cradle or support structure, reinforced forks may be used to lift the coil from underneath.
This is often a relatively simple solution.
Coil Ram
A coil ram enters through the center hole of the coil.
This can make direct coil handling easier in some applications.
But a coil ram cannot be selected only by its length.
We also need to consider:
- Coil weight
- Coil inside diameter
- Coil width
- Ram diameter
- Ram length
- Actual load center
A very long ram can move the coil farther forward and increase the load moment.
Coil Orientation Is Important
The position of the coil eye must be confirmed before choosing an attachment.
If the coil eye is horizontal, a ram-type solution may be practical.
If the coil is stored differently, another handling method may be better.
This is why we often ask customers to send photos of the coils in their actual storage area.
Working Height
Many steel coil forklifts mainly work at relatively low heights.
The truck may unload coils, transfer them between production areas or place them onto processing equipment.
In this case, there is usually no reason to use an unnecessarily tall mast.
If the coil needs to be lifted to a higher working position, residual capacity at that height needs to be checked.
Working Surface
Steel plants can have very different ground conditions.
Some customers operate entirely on smooth concrete.
Others work across outdoor yards, steel plates or uneven industrial surfaces.
This affects tire selection and the overall truck configuration.
For heavy coils, stable ground and correct tire selection are especially important.
A Practical Example
A 14-ton coil handled from underneath with reinforced forks may require one configuration.
The same 14-ton coil handled through its center with a long coil ram may require another.
The weight has not changed.
The handling method has.
That is why the forklift should be selected around the complete working condition, not simply the coil tonnage.
Final Thoughts
For steel coil handling, the three most important questions are:
How heavy is the coil?
What are its dimensions?
How will it be lifted?
Once these are clear, it becomes much easier to determine the correct forklift capacity, attachment and mast.
For customized coil-handling equipment, photos and drawings of the actual load are usually the best starting point.
