What Is Free Lift And When Does A Forklift Need It?
Free lift is an important mast feature when a forklift needs to raise its forks without immediately increasing the overall mast height.
This can be useful in low-clearance working areas such as containers, factory buildings or covered loading areas.
For these applications, maximum lifting height alone does not tell the full story.
How Does Free Lift Work?
With free lift, the fork carriage can travel upward for a certain distance while the main mast sections remain in their lowered position.
Only after the available free lift is used does the mast begin to extend.
This allows the operator to raise the load while keeping the forklift's overall height relatively low during the first part of the lifting movement.
Where Is Free Lift Useful?
Free lift is commonly considered when the forklift works in places with limited overhead clearance.
Examples include:
- inside containers
- low factory doors
- warehouses
- covered loading areas
- indoor production lines
A forklift may need to pick up a load, raise it slightly and move while still remaining below a roof or doorway.
In this case, free lift can be more useful than simply specifying a taller mast.

Free Lift And Maximum Lift Height Are Different
These two specifications should not be confused.
Maximum lifting height describes how high the forks can eventually rise.
Free lift describes how far the forks can rise before the mast itself begins to extend.
For example, a forklift may have a relatively high final lifting height but still offer useful free lift for low-clearance operation.
Confirm The Actual Working Space
Before selecting a mast with free lift, we normally need to know:
- doorway height
- ceiling height
- required load lifting height
- load height
- available overhead clearance
- whether the forklift works inside containers
For specialized Propolift models, mast design can be configured around the actual operating area.
For low-clearance work, understanding both the closed mast height and the required free lift is more useful than looking only at the maximum lift figure.
